The |RD| mIRC How to guide. By eZZa

This guide is designed to assist the novice wanna be RD mIRC'er, it only gives you the basics in setting it up so you can connect to the #tribers chat channel using the most popular of IRC clients, mIRC.

For general information about mIRC and IRC itself please visit the mIRC web site by clicking here.

Why would you want to use mIRC when you can simply click on the "#Tribers Chat' menu on the left there? Well some people can not use the Java IRC client that it uses to connect to and some people just hate how it works altogether. Compared to the Java version, mIRC is a much more powerfull and faster IRC client  that can be used to do many things within the IRC environment, none of which we will be going into here, but they are there.

Just above is a screen shot that shows the three main toolbar buttons that we will be using to get you started.

The first button is the 'Connect'/'Disconnect' button, this button as it says lets you connect to your chosen IRC server and disconnect from an IRC server that you are currently attached to.
'Connect' shows when not connected and  'Disconnect' shows when connected.

The second button is the 'Options' button, this will bring up the options dialog where you can customise mIRC to your preference.

The third button that we will be using is the 'Channels Folder' this one allows you to add channels to your mIRC client for later use, as well as an easy way to join a channel.

Steps to get to the RD #tribers using mIRC:
  1. Download and install the mIRC client, you can get the mIRC client from the mIRC website.
  2. Load up the mIRC client.
  3. When you first load mIRC you should be confronted with the 'mIRC Options' dialog box below, if you are not then just click on the 'Options' toolbar button.
  4. Enter in your details for 'Full Name', 'E-Mail Address', 'Nickname' & 'Alternative'[Nickname]. 'Invisible mode' doesn't truly make you invisible to people in the same channel as you, just people outside of the channels you are in will not be able to see you unless they actually join it.
  5. Now we will add the server that RD currently use, click on the 'Add' button.
  6. You will now have in front of you a new dialog box like the one below, enter the details as you see it here into your one, the fields that have to be exactly as you see here are 'IRC Server', 'Port(s)' & 'Password', the rest you can change as you please, when done press 'Add' to save it.
  7. You should now be back at the 'mIRC Options' dialog, the larger 'IRC Servers' drop down box should have the 'IRC Server' you created in the previous step already selected displaying the 'Description' you gave it. If it is not already selected, pull down the smaller 'IRC Servers' drop down box and select the 'Group' you entered in the previous step. If it is not already selected now, select the 'IRC Server' from the larger drop down box.
  8. Press the 'Connect to IRC Server' button, the 'mIRC Options' dialog box will now disappear and you will see some activity in the 'Status' window. Once this activity has stopped and says something other than 'Unable to connect' or the like, this will signify that you are now connected to the 'IRC Server'.
  9. Click on the 'Channels Folder' toolbar button.
  10. You will now be looking at the 'mIRC Channels Folder' dialog box. From here you can manage your list of channels by using the buttons to the right of the dialog box, the main thing we are interested in here is the ability to join a channel. In the 'Enter name of channel to join' input box enter '#tribers' then click the 'Join' button.
  11. The 'mIRC Channels Folder' dialog box will now disappear and in a few seconds a new window will appear called '#tribers'. This window should be split into two screens, the one on the left is the chat window, the one on the right is the user list. Within a few seconds  the chat window will display some text, at this point the user list should populate with the nick names of the people in the channel, at the very least your nick name should be in there.
  12. Congratulations!! you should now be connected to the RD Tribers public IRC channel, wasn't so hard was it :) now go on say hello to the nice people and have a good time.

Some things that you might like to know how to do,

  • Emote, type '/me', space, then whatever you like after it, e.g. '/me smacks a trout around with a wet Vurt' will display to everyone in the channel '{eZZa} smacks a trout around with a wet Vurt' :)
  • Personal Message (PM), type '/msg', space, the nick of the person you want to send a personal message to, then the message you want to send them, e.g. '/msg LeXie Hello LeXie :)' will send a message to LeXie that only she can see saying 'Hello LeXie :)' and that it was from you. If you start sending many PM's to the same person it will be easier to start up a query window to the person. To do this simply double click on the nick name of the person you want to PM in the Nick Name list on the right side of '#tribers' window, this will bring up another window named after the nick of the person you double clicked on. This window, if you type in it, will direct all text to that person, within it you never have to type '/msg nick'.

Well that should be enough to get you started in the very large world of IRC, there are hundreds of IRC networks around the world, with thousands of IRC servers with, ten's of thousands of channels  and each with its own unique purpose, for now though you are in RD's little chat world, but hey, where else would you want to be?

As with everything in life take care & enjoy yourself!!!
